United Airlines Launches New Airbus A321XLR with Premium Cabin Features

United Airlines is set to debut its newest aircraft, the Airbus A321XLR, with international flights starting December 1st, immediately following Thanksgiving. The inaugural routes will connect Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Dublin and Amsterdam, marking a significant step for the carrier.

New A321XLR Boasts Premium Cabin Experience

Industry experts have long viewed the A321XLR as a potential game-changer for airlines, and United’s launch aims to solidify that perception. TPG recently gained exclusive access to a preview of the aircraft, highlighting several key interior upgrades.

The aircraft features 20 newly designed Polaris business-class suites, offering lie-flat seats, sliding privacy doors, and 19-inch 4K entertainment screens. Notably, these suites are arranged in a 1-1 configuration, maximizing shoulder room – a deliberate design choice to address previous concerns about tight quarters on similar single-aisle planes.

Moving into Premium Plus, passengers will find three rows of recliners in a 2-2 configuration, equipped with privacy wings and cocktail trays. Similar to premium economy on many twin-aisle planes, there are no middle seats in this section.

Economy passengers will also benefit from enhanced comfort, with approximately 30% of seats upgraded to United’s Extra Legroom Economy Plus, including a special row with a blocked middle seat available for an additional fee. United’s economy seats are equipped with 13-inch seatback screens and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless headphones.

A unique addition to the aircraft is a walk-up snack bar located at the rear of the plane, a decision made by United’s Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Nocella, to prioritize passenger comfort on longer journeys, despite the possibility of adding more coach seats.

United’s investment in premium features for the A321XLR reflects its vision for utilizing this single-aisle aircraft on longer-haul routes, demonstrating a commitment to providing a more comfortable experience for passengers regardless of class.
