Traveler Secures Flight to Witness Solar Eclipse Totality

Matthew Jackson, founder of River Chase Adventures, embarked on a last-minute journey to witness the upcoming solar eclipse from the sky, overcoming initial planning errors and securing a British Airways Flight.

From Travel Ban to Eclipse Chase

Jackson initially planned a period of rest after a busy year, imposing a travel ban for August. However, a sudden urge for adventure led him to reconsider, particularly with the opportunity to view eclipse totality nearby.

Finding the Perfect Flight

After researching flights using SeatSpy and Seats.aero, Jackson discovered surprisingly good availability on British Airways. He initially planned to fly to Palma de Mallorca, but a viewer pointed out a scientific error – the flight would be too far north to experience totality.

A Collaborative Solution

Working with an airline pilot, Jackson analyzed FlightRadar24 data and identified British Airways Flight 2644 from London Gatwick (LGW) to Malaga-Costa del Sol (AGP) as the ideal option, noting a typical one-hour delay that would position the flight perfectly.

Booking and Travel

Award availability was found in both economy and business class, costing 14,000 Avios plus £2.50 in taxes and fees. Jackson secured window seats on the west-facing side and departed to witness the eclipse.
