Southwest Airlines Announces Lounges, Expanding Rapid Rewards Program
Southwest Airlines is officially launching lounges, marking a significant shift in its business model. Construction is already underway at four initial locations – Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu, and Nashville – with anticipated openings slated for late next year.
Expansion Plans Underway
The carrier plans to add at least seven more lounges over the next several years, targeting high-demand business and leisure markets across the Southwest system. This expansion represents a broader footprint for the airline, moving beyond its traditional no-frills approach.

Lounge Access Through New Credit Card
Access to these lounges will be granted through a new, premium Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card issued by Chase, debuting next year. Customers will need this card to gain entry.

Shifting Business Model
Southwest’s move to introduce lounges follows a series of changes in recent years, including the introduction of assigned seating and the elimination of its “Bags Fly Free” policy, which began last year. The airline is also increasingly relying on its branded credit cards for revenue, offering perks like discounted award tickets and preferential boarding to incentivize applications.
Historical Context
Once known for its open seating and all-economy cabin, Southwest has undergone a dramatic transformation, aligning itself more closely with full-service legacy carriers like American, Delta, and United. This evolution reflects a strategic effort to enhance the passenger experience and compete more effectively in the airline industry.
