IHG to Add 14 Hotels in Kyoto, Strengthening Presence in Japan

IHG One Rewards members have more reason to visit Japan, specifically Kyoto, as IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement to convert 14 hotels in the popular tourist destination over the next year.

A Significant Portfolio Expansion

The 1,063-room portfolio includes 12 Garner hotels (a midscale conversion brand within IHG’s portfolio), a Holiday Inn Express, and one unbranded hotel. These properties are strategically located in key districts of Kyoto, ensuring guests are close to major transport hubs and popular cultural attractions.

This deal marks another step in Garner’s rapid growth, having recently celebrated the opening of its 100th hotel globally since its launch three years ago. IHG's partnership with GCP Hospitality (the hospitality arm of Gaw Capital Group) is also strengthened, with GCP leading the management team for the 14 new hotels.

IHG already has a diverse portfolio in Kyoto, ranging from budget-friendly options like Holiday Inn Kyoto Gojo to luxurious properties like Six Senses Kyoto and ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto. The addition of these 14 hotels will position IHG as a major international player in Kyoto's hotel market, which has historically been dominated by domestic operators.

Abhijay Sandilya, Managing Director, Japan & Micronesia, IHG Hotels & Resorts and CEO of IHG ANA Hotels Group Japan, highlighted the growing interest in rebranding hotels to leverage IHG's enterprise, marketing, technology, distribution platforms, and the global reach of IHG One Rewards.

Following renovations and rebranding, the 14 properties are expected to open in phases over the next 12 months, with availability for booking through IHG One Rewards anticipated shortly thereafter.
