Engine woes cripple air travel: delivery delays & airline struggles intensify
Airlines are experiencing
a paradoxical situation: passenger numbers are soaring, yet a severe bottleneck in aircraft engine production is grinding operations to a halt. The fallout is rippling through the industry, impacting fuel efficiency, fleet management, and ultimately, the bottom lines of carriers worldwide.
Pratt & whitney engine issues at the heart of the problem
The crisis centers on Pratt & Whitney's Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines, a mainstay on Airbus's popular A320neo family and other aircraft. Production has been plagued by quality control issues, including impurities in powdered metal, leading to widespread recalls and extended inspection times. The cost to rectify these issues has ballooned, with some aircraft sitting idle for over 300 days awaiting repairs.
The impact is far-reaching. Airlines are missing out on anticipated fuel savings as newer, more efficient planes remain grounded. Delayed deliveries force operators to rely on older, less economical aircraft, increasing operating costs. The backlog of unfinished aircraft – airframes without engines – is growing, potentially reaching 60 or more, according to Airbus’s Christian Scherer.
Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury has been direct in his criticism of engine manufacturers, specifically naming Pratt & Whitney, GE, and Safran, accusing them of prioritizing profit margins over consistent supply. He pointed to profit margins reaching 27% as a direct consequence of airline losses stemming from these disruptions.
The situation isn't limited to Pratt & Whitney. CFM International, another major engine supplier, is also experiencing output challenges. A ripple effect means even minor disruptions can significantly impact the entire aviation sector. The delays are forcing budget airlines like Wizz Air to scale back expansion plans, while others, like Royal Air Maroc and Ethiopian Airlines, are increasingly reliant on leasing aircraft to maintain capacity.
The long-term implications are significant. While Pratt & Whitney projects a full recovery of its GTF engine fleet around 2030, Airbus forecasts delays for newly built jets could extend beyond six months through 2028. The sheer volume of delayed aircraft—potentially 15,000 to 16,000 planes in the backlog by late 2025—underscores the scale of the challenge.
The current disruption exposes vulnerabilities in the industry's supply chain, even as passenger demand surges. The pressure on airlines is mounting, forcing difficult choices about fleet management and expansion.
