Mapping a new rail network
The growth isn't a sudden spike, but a steady build-up fueled by expanding international connections. Forget the traditional image of German rail; DB is rapidly transforming into a key player in cross-border travel. But the momentum isn't solely confined to established corridors.

Beyond the postcard: a new perspective

Weekend ICE trains will extend their reach, connecting Cologne to Ghent, Bruges, and the Belgian coast. And in July and August, direct Frankfurt-Bordeaux services will debut. Looking further ahead, a new Munich-Milan-Rome connection, in partnership with Trenitalia and ÖBB, is slated for 2027, with whispers of a second Berlin-Paris service – potentially cutting journey times dramatically.

London’s long roadblock
However, progress on the notoriously difficult London route remains a challenge. Even with connections via Brussels, a seamless German-London service proves elusive, hampered by the UK’s continued exclusion from the Schengen area. Specific station zones with enhanced screening are required, according to Peterson, and collaboration with Eurostar continues. A nonstop service remains years away, but the groundwork is being laid.
Fuelled by uncertainty and renewables
External factors are also contributing to the rise. Increased fuel costs, driven by geopolitical instability, have pushed travelers towards rail. On some days, ridership increases by as much as one-tenth. Crucially, DB is leveraging renewable energy sources to power its operations, mitigating the price volatility associated with fossil fuels. Contracts guaranteeing electricity rates through 2027 provide a vital layer of financial security.
Addressing operational friction
Despite these successes, DB faces ongoing challenges. Losses totaling billions were reported in 2025, necessitating a strategic reorganization. Improving service consistency is now paramount. On-time performance in April reached 64.4%, a significant improvement from earlier months, with a target of 60% punctuality across 2026. But beneath these figures lie persistent issues. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is being deployed to manage delays, analyzing connections in real-time to optimize dispatching, rather than relying on rigid schedules. This adaptive approach, learning from each disruption, promises smoother journeys. While complete elimination of delays remains a distant goal, the system’s ability to mitigate ripple effects is a tangible benefit.
