Carnival Cruise Line Unveils New Loyalty Program, Ending "Status for Life"

In a significant overhaul, Carnival Cruise Line has launched its new Carnival Rewards program, replacing the 14-year-old VIFP Club. The four-tier system brings major changes to how customers earn and maintain status.

Unlike the previous program, which awarded status solely based on cruise days, the new program uses a spend-based system, similar to airline loyalty programs. This shift has been met with criticism from some Carnival regulars who were accustomed to earning status through inexpensive sailings.

Under Carnival Rewards, customers will earn points for every dollar spent on eligible purchases, including cruise fares, onboard expenses, and even casino play. These points can be redeemed for cruises, experiences, and other perks. A separate Status Qualifying Stars system also tracks spending to unlock status and additional benefits.

While the "status for life" perk is no longer available, the new program offers a faster path to rewards, with points redeemable from the first sailing. Carnival aims to provide more flexibility and choice in how customers use their points.

"We wanted to create a program where there is rewards and flexibility available from that first sailing onwards . and [give] the guests the choice of where they want to use their points," said Sidharth Krishna, Carnival's vice president of loyalty, co-brand and partnerships.

The new program also introduces the Carnival Rewards Mastercard, a co-branded credit card that earns points on Carnival purchases. Existing Carnival World Mastercard holders have been automatically transitioned to the new card.

With the Carnival Rewards launch, the cruise line is embracing a more modern approach to loyalty, offering customers more ways to earn and redeem rewards while providing greater flexibility in their cruise experiences.
