Travelers navigating the journey from airport to city center in Europe face a stark reality: the cost and duration of that first leg significantly impact the overall Travel experience. A new analysis by Fit Reisen reveals a continent-wide disparity in airport transfer costs and times, with Eastern and Southern Europe offering remarkably better value than their Western counterparts.

The study, which examined transit systems across 66 European airports, found that the cheapest transfer is at Málaga Airport in Spain, where reaching the Maria Zambrano rail hub costs just €1.80 in nine minutes. Vilnius Airport in Lithuania follows closely, with a 24-minute journey for €1. Poznan Airport in Poland also scores highly, with a 15-minute ride to the central train station costing €1.61.
But the affordability trend is strongly concentrated in Eastern Europe. In Chisinau, Moldova, a ride costs a mere €0.30. Zagreb in Croatia offers a price of €0.93, and even larger cities like Warsaw in Poland keep fares below €2. This affordability is a key factor for travelers, particularly those watching their budgets or traveling with families.
The contrast with Western Europe is striking. Stockholm Arlanda Airport, for instance, sees transfers to the central rail stop costing €20.59 – nearly four times the European average of €4.90. Paris fares also suffer from lengthy transfer times, exceeding 75 minutes, which detracts from the overall experience.
The importance of transfer speed is also evident. While some cities offer quick connections, high prices can negate the benefit. Copenhagen, Marseille, and Manchester all fall in the rankings due to a poor balance of speed and cost. Budapest Airport and Milan Malpensa fared poorly, with tickets costing €9.20 and €9.20 respectively. In Germany, Munich lags behind, with the S-Bahn trip to Central Station costing over €15 and taking 44 minutes.

Public transport to the city center is a vital component of the Travel experience for many Europeans – between 35% and 45% rely on it. Efficient, low-cost connections not only benefit travelers but also alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the overall appeal of a destination.
Düsseldorf Airport in Germany stands out as a leader in Germany, offering swift access to the city center. Nuremberg is also well-positioned, with a 14-minute journey. Cologne-Bonn sits at 11th place, with an average transfer time of 16 minutes.
The findings highlight a clear correlation: the ease with which travelers can reach their destination significantly influences their perception of a city. As Travel rebounds, those destinations offering seamless, affordable airport transfers are poised to gain a competitive edge. The price of entry to a city is becoming an increasingly important factor in choosing where to go.
