Airport city links: east europe offers best value

Getting from airport to downtown can be a costly affair, especially in Western Europe. But a new study reveals that travelers can find strong value in Southern and Eastern European cities.

Eastern europe's affordable options

According to Fit Reisen's research, airports in Eastern Europe offer some of the cheapest and fastest connections to city centers.

Málaga Airport in Spain tops the list, with a 9-minute journey to downtown costing just €1.80. Vilnius Airport in Lithuania comes in second, with a 24-minute ride priced at €1. Poznan Airport in Poland takes third, offering a 15-minute trip at €1.61.

Even larger Eastern European cities like Chisinau, with a mere 0.30 euro per ride, and Zagreb, at €0.93, keep costs remarkably low.

Western europe's steep prices

However, prices rise sharply in Western Europe. Stockholm Arlanda Airport charges €20.59 for a ride to the central rail station, nearly four times the continent's average of €4.90.

Cities like Paris, with over 75-minute transfers, and Copenhagen, Marseille, and Manchester, all face lower scores due to the mismatch between speed and cost. Travelers spend more on these connections than the time saved.

Budapest Airport and Milan Malpensa also rank low, with high prices and lengthy journeys.

German airports vary

Within Germany, airports show diverse performance. Düsseldorf Airport stands out for its swift access, while Nuremberg and Cologne-Bonn airports also offer efficient connections.

However, Frankfurt am Main drags behind due to high fares, despite rapid arrivals and departures.

These findings highlight the importance of affordable and efficient public transport for travelers, particularly those with limited budgets or families.

The study suggests that easy airport-city links may become a key differentiator for destinations, influencing visitor interest and overall trip satisfaction.
