Berlin falls short of 30 million overnight stays mark in 2025

Berlin, Germany's capital, recorded 29.4 million overnight stays and 12.4 million guests in 2025, falling short of the 30 million mark. This is a decline compared to the strong recovery seen in 2024, when the city hosted 12.7 million guests for 30.6 million overnight stays.

2025 Numbers still impressive, but below pre-pandemic levels

While the results are below the 2019 record, when nearly 14 million tourists made more than 34 million overnight stays, Visit Berlin CEO Burkhard Kieker remained positive. He pointed out that Berlin still ranks in the top five tourism destinations in Europe.

Solo travelers keep berlin competitive

Berlin does exceptionally well with solo travelers, with only Dublin ranking higher in this category. Kieker attributed this to the city's vibrant cultural scene and affordability.

Trade fairs and congresses boost tourism

Experts emphasized the importance of trade fairs and congresses in attracting visitors. Major events like ILA and InnoTrans, which focus on aerospace and transport technology respectively, bring in large international crowds.

A promising outlook for 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, the year will include several significant trade fairs, including ILA and InnoTrans. These events, which occur in even-numbered years, are expected to boost tourism. Berlin is also set to celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2037, which could have a positive impact on tourism in the coming decade.

Domestic tourism leads, international markets evolve

In 2025, domestic tourism led the market, with German visitors making more than 17.3 million overnight stays, accounting for 58.9% of the total. The top international markets included the United States, Great Britain, and the Netherlands, although these numbers dropped compared to 2024. Turkey, China, and Israel, however, showed significant growth.

Berlin trails peers in national comparison

While Berlin leads tourism volume within Germany, it lags behind Munich and Hamburg, which have recovered to or surpassed their pre-pandemic levels. Experts attribute this to local challenges in Berlin, rather than general consumer caution.

Connectivity and infrastructure criticized

Kieker sharply criticized the federal government and Lufthansa for hurting Berlin and eastern Germany in terms of air connectivity. He noted that Lufthansa often directs long-haul passengers to its western hubs, rather than Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER).

Despite the challenges, experts remain optimistic about Berlin's tourism prospects, citing the city's unique attractions and the potential for targeted marketing strategies.
