Condor Expands U.S. Reach with New Nonstop Route to Chicago

Midwestern travelers, rejoice. Condor, the German leisure airline, is adding Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to its North American network, offering a new, seasonal nonstop option to Frankfurt and beyond. The move puts pressure on established carriers United Airlines and Lufthansa, both of whom already operate daily service on the popular transatlantic route.

A Strategic Addition to Condor's Network

The airline announced this week the launch of daily seasonal nonstop flights between Chicago and Frankfurt, commencing May 14, 2027, and running through September 12, 2027. This will mark Condor’s 12th gateway in the U.S. and Canada, signaling a continued expansion strategy across the continent. According to Condor CEO Peter Gerber, Chicago was selected as an “ideal addition” due to its significant potential for both leisure and Business travel, providing convenient access to a major U.S. metropolitan region and seamless connections to Europe through Frankfurt, Condor's hub.

While Condor doesn’t participate in any of the three major global airline alliances (Star Alliance, SkyTeam, or Oneworld), the airline maintains partnerships with Alaska Airlines’ Atmos Rewards program and JetBlue’s TrueBlue, allowing travelers to earn and redeem miles on Condor flights.

Enhanced Passenger Experience and Airport Transition

Passengers on the Chicago route will experience Condor’s Airbus A330neo aircraft, featuring lie-flat seats in Business class with direct aisle access, alongside enhanced legroom and upgraded amenities in premium economy. The launch coincides with a significant operational shift for Condor in Frankfurt: the airline will be relocating its operations to the airport’s new Terminal 3. This transition is expected to reduce walking distances and streamline connections between long-haul and European flights.

The competitive landscape on the Chicago-Frankfurt route is already well-established, with United and Lufthansa each offering daily service. However, Condor’s entry adds a new, budget-friendly option for travelers seeking European connections, particularly those prioritizing leisure travel. The airline’s focus on leisure markets, coupled with its competitive pricing, could prove a significant draw for Chicago-based passengers.
